Don’t forget your furry (or feathery) family

If you had to evacuate in 5 minutes, would your pet be ready?

For many of us, pets are family. But many emergency plans forget them.

The Quick Start Guide to Inclusive Community Preparedness for Changemakers helps you think through care - for your human and non-human kin.

Here are 5 steps to create a pet-inclusive plan:

1. Pack a pet go-bag Include:

  • 72hrs of food and water

  • Medication + vet instructions

  • Toy or blanket for comfort

  • Waste bags or litter

2. Plan for evacuation Set up:

  • A carrier or leash by the door.

  • Label it with your contact info.

  • Include your pet on evacuation drills.

3. Identify safe pet-friendly shelters Research:

  • Local hotels that accept animals

  • Friends or family who can foster

  • Pet-friendly evacuation shelters

  • Kennels or pet day cares

Write these down and keep them in your plan.

4. Tag and document everything Make sure your pet:

  • Has ID tags and microchips (if applicable)

  • Has up-to-date vaccinations (if applicable)

  • Is documented in your emergency file

5. Choose a buddy system

  • If you’re not home, who can check on or evacuate your pet?

  • Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor.

  • Share your plan.
