Preparedness doesn’t have to be expensive

Let’s bust a myth: You don’t need a $300 kit to be prepared.

And in this economy we are leaning into saving and sharing, not spending or hoarding - fuck capitalism!

In fact, many of the most effective preparedness strategies are free—or cost just a few dollars. In the Inclusive Community Preparedness Lab, we help people start with what they already have.

Here are 5 ways to build a kit on a budget:

1. Use what you already own Start by shopping your house:

  • Use an old backpack or tote

  • Repurpose camping gear, old jars, or office supplies

  • Fill water bottles from the tap and rotate monthly

Good enough is better than perfect.

2. Prioritize by category Start with:

  • Water (1.5L/day) ... if that is too much to carry - make the choice that is best for you.

  • Food (3 days of shelf-stable) ... I like granola bars and canned beans

  • Light source (I have a flashlight, some glow sticks, and old candles)

  • Copy of ID and contacts (mine are written on printer paper and stored in a zip-loc)

  • Medicine and hygiene (I have a roll of toilet paper in a zip-loc and my headache meds)

Then slowly add on.

3. Thrift and trade Look for:

  • Flashlights at the dollar store

  • Free gear in local Buy Nothing groups

  • Hunting knife, multi-tool, etc. at thrift shops, Craigslist, or garage sales

  • Large backpack - ask your friends if they have an old one laying around

Budget preparedness is community preparedness.

4. Build it with friends Make it social:

  • Host a preparedness party

  • Share bulk items (like a flat of water or canned goods)

  • Trade tools and tips

You don’t have to do this alone.

5. Don’t forget the comfort items A granola bar you like is better than a freeze-dried meal you’ll unlikely enjoy. Include:

  • A favorite snack

  • A spiritual or cultural item

  • A book, photo, or scent that brings ease

Preparedness isn’t just survival. It’s humanity.

Daniela GR Consulting operates in solidarity with the  xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations on whose stolen and occupied land I live and work. Solidarity means acting in a manner that supports Indigenous rights on this land and applying their teachings regarding my relationship to the local nations and this land.  To me this looks like acknowledging that all struggles against oppression are interconnected, and practicing acts of resistance that makes space for joy and justice.
