Emergency kits aren’t one-size-fits-all

Most emergency checklists assume people are all able bodied, neurotypical, fluent English speaker.

But many of us live with disability, chronic illness, or neurodivergence - and our needs are different.

In the Inclusive Community Preparedness Lab, we explore what accessible, customized, and sovereignty-affirming preparedness can actually look like.

Here are 5 practical ways to prepare inclusively:

1. Build a specific go-bag that addresses the disability. Your kit should include:

  • Medications (in a labeled, waterproof pouch)

  • Extra hearing aid or mobility device batteries

  • Visual communication tools or sensory supports

  • Assistive tech chargers or backup power source

Ask: can you carry it yourself? If not, what system would make it portable, or who can support you?

2. Prep evacuation support plans. Have a written plan for how to evacuate with:

  • A wheelchair or scooter

  • Service animal

  • Sensory overload

  • Limited mobility

Print and laminate (or place in plastic bag) support instructions for roomates, family, neighbours, caregivers or responders.

3. Pack emotional and sensory regulation items Emergency spaces are often overstimulating and disorienting.

  • Pack noise-canceling headphones

  • Sunglasses

  • Fidget tools

  • Weighted scarf.

  • Include calming visuals, affirmations, or written communication aids.

4. Simplify instructions and create visual cues If you or someone you live with benefits from step-by-step prompts, create:

  • Color-coded checklists

  • Picture-based instructions

  • Routines for grounding in chaos

These can be life-saving in high-stress moments.

5. Prepare your caregivers and allies Let your support network know:

  • What your triggers are

  • What your plan is

  • What they can do to help

Preparedness is collective care. Let’s prepare together. (I'll be writing a future blog just for you allies, it's our responsibility to make ourselves available - keep your eyes out for it!)
