As a nonprofit leader, community builder, teacher, or frontline worker it can be hard to get folks to think about preparedness when the cost is too expensive for so many community members!
This is specially true if your community is racialized, disabled, undocumented, or under-resourced - the typical advice to “go buy a $300 kit” is inaccessible financially, and not relevant to many of their lived experiences or cultural needs..
And the fear-based messaging? It just shuts people down.
But preparedness can be empowering.
It can be affordable, trauma-informed, culturally relevant, and even joyful.
It starts with something simple:
a 72HR emergency kit built just for them - by them, with what they already have.
You care for others - it’s in everything you do.
And as climate chaos and systemic violence grow, you want your community to be ready.
But most preparedness advice doesn't quite address the needs of your diverse communities.

The checklists assume:
-
You have disposable income
-
You have a well stocked store nearby
-
You are able to create plans and follow through easily
-
Your body moves without barriers
-
Your family structure is nuclear and your culture is “mainstream”

They ignore
-
intergenerational households
-
cultural practices + spiritual beliefs
-
historical trauma + immigration status
-
access needs due to injury, cognitive agility, etc.
-
collective care, joy, community connection

I created this workshop because I’ve watched too many care-centered changemakers feel overwhelmed, shut down, or left out by preparedness frameworks that weren’t designed for us.

You want your people to be ready.
In an emergency, your community will turn to you - but without a plan, you may not have the capacity to support them all.

Preparedness, isn't just practical in times of uncertainty.
Preparedness is a care practice.
And it starts here.

You’ve done the earthquake drills.
You've bought the office kit.
You've made a binder.
And the fire department comes in on a regular basis to check your sprinklers.

This is important and essential work!
-
But what happens if it is not a drill, it's the real thing and now you and your community can't get home?
-
Or if the kit has everything you could need but not the daily life saving medication a team members need?
-
And, does everyone on your team know where that kit is in case the health and safety officer in your workplace is unable to lead in an emergency?

How do you build a kit that is reflective of your diverse communities, and your unique needs?

I’ve helped hundreds of changemakers like yourself build on these essentials so that your diverse communties are more equipped to address their unique needs in an emergency.
In this workshop I will help you start to build a quick and easy emergency kit and think through different parts of the emergency kit so that you and your community are equipped to look after yourselves and each other in ways that are reflective of your lived realities.

Does this sound like you?

Building your own 72hour emergency kit is a care practice for yourself, and a chance for your community to do the same.
It's not about fancy gadgets, perfect kits, or surviving on your own - it's about starting with what we have, together.
I do preparedness differently. It’s grounded in collective wellbeing and begins by meeting you where you are - not where you “should” be.
Together, we’ll walk through:
How to start a kit using what you already have
-
no shopping required - to start
-
no tactical gear required - unless you have some already
-
no huge list that makes you feel like you are behind
How to address what generic checklists miss
-
items that are culturally responsive - freeze dried food isn't it
-
items that support mental and emotional wellness - not just physical wellbeing
-
thinking styles - some of us don't work well with lists, this workshop is a chance to body double
How to continue to build your kit sustainably
-
brainstorming ways to find items you need
-
brainstorming creative emergency response methods if first responders and tools are unavailable
-
brainstorming ways to overcome challenges to continue to build your kit

You will leave the workshop with:
-
A kit you’ve started (or refreshed) — rooted in what actually matters to you.
-
This is an online workshop because I encourage folks to walk around and gather supplies while on the workshop. Yes, there will be slides for those that like visuals, but no, they are not essential to the workshop. The most important part is you taking this time to gather your supplies and
-

-
Ideas for how to prepare better for your household or workplace
-
There may be some needs you didn't realize you would have, your household, your co-workers or your community might have. now in your preparedness you can prepare better.
-

-
A better understanding of why you prepare (or procrastinate on preparedness) and adopt a different perspective so that you aren't overcome by fear and scarcity
-
Justice oriented, collective, trauma informed preparedness means know ing what we need to support us not just in an emergency or crisis but also in preparing for it.
-
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about starting small - and starting together.
